Submitted by Kathy O'Neal, Past President, NELRC
What an excellent job! We would like commend Christie and her wonderful committee for their contributions to the Young Author Contest that takes much time and effort to organize. The YA is one of the most extensive programs sponsored by the International Reading Association and the Louisiana Reading Association. The NELRC sponsors 11 school districts from the northeast region including the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Christie and her committee are to be praised for their superb organization of this awesome event to promote literacy.

2005-2006
The NELRC would like to commend Janet' Fisher and her committee for their hard work in judging the Young Author entries. A special thanks to Teddie Henderson for copying and organizing the entries and Denise Lowe for creating the certificates. These excellent professionals provide this wonderful opportunity for youth across northeast Louisiana, and everyone is truly appreciated.

The NELRC would like to thank several people for serving as judges for the 2005-2006 LRA State Judging for the Young Authors Contest that was held on February 16, 2006 at the Ouachita Parish Media Center.
Mrs. Janet' Fisher hosted the event and provided a beautiful refreshment table for the judges. YA Chairperson Tiffany Hughes of Washington Parish complimented Janet' on the well organized event.
The following people served as judges or helped with the event: Debbie McCalmon, Alice Hattaway, Brenda Smith, Edna Roberson, Mary Crandall, Hennetta Morehead, Lynn Morris, Linda King, Debbie Ducote, Kim Aithus, Tammy Timley, Hilda Griffin, Janet' Fisher, Sah Mc Vil, Nancy Dever, Vanessa Cade, Duanne Porter, Losd, Sharon Rawles, Teddie Henderson all of Ouachita Parish, Kathy O'Neal of West Carroll, Bridget Plauche' of West Feleciana.

Suggestions for participating in Young Authors Contest:
Individual teachers should begin a writing portfolio on students at the beginning of the year to prepare for the Young Authors Contest. Information from the state is usually given to the NELRC in September and is sent to the parish Membership Director immediately by fax or mail. The Membership Director sends information to each school in the parish or district. The representative for the school is responsible for sending information and collecting the entries for judging. Voting within each school usually takes places before Christmas holiday and is submitted back to the Parish Membership Director or whoever is assigned to Young Authors contest in each parish/district. Parish/district winners are usually submitted after returning from Christmas holiday in January. The winners are submitted to the Young Author Chairperson for each parish, and all are judged by a panel of writing educators. NELRC winners are submitted to the LRA for final state judging. Young Author entries are sent to the state in February.
