II. Goals of the Northeast Louisiana Reading Council and the Louisiana Reading Association for NIE:
1. Develop and implement Newspaper in Education curriculum for classroom use in English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Geography, and Family Involvement.
2. Develop and promote Newspaper in Education content for students in
Grades K-12.
3. Recognize an exemplary teacher in the state that uses the newspaper to teach and promote literacy in the classroom.
4. Promote Newspaper in Education Week (last week in March)and disseminate the necessary information to Councils in September for a successful campaign.
5. Contact major local and state newspapers for activities/and/or support of the NLRC and LRA Newspaper in Education.

March 2007 Report
The Newspaper in Education Committee has established a strong program by utilizing area NIE coordinators from newspapers across the state. These ladies have worked diligently to pull together resources for educators and share the information. They initiate workshops and specific training, provide free newspapers and other resources, create curriculum correlated to the GLEs as mandated by the Louisiana Department of Education, promote NIE Week the last week of March, judge an NIE contest for grades K-12 that promotes literacy, and select an Exemplary NIE Teacher of the Year. According to area newspapers, the NIE program in Louisiana affects over 500 educators.
Our objectives for the upcoming year include:
1. Determine how many school districts and schools participate in the NIE program.
2. Provide curriculum specially prepared for NIE Week available from IRA and evaluate the materials according to Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum and GLEs.
3. Recognize the organizations that cooperate in carrying out the NIE programs.
4. Compile documentation of special activities of NIE for the LRA’s Award of Excellence.

Grade: Pre-K – Kindergarten Alphabet Picture Book
Scrapbook should not exceed 10 ½ X 13 12 in size. All work should come from the newspaper.
Using pictures from the newspaper, match each letter of the alphabet.
Illustrate each letter of the alphabet using one picture from the newspaper (only).
Judging: originality, creativity
Grade: 1 Alphabet Word Scrapbook
Scrapbook should not exceed 10 ½ X 13 ½ in size.
Using words cut from the newspaper, match each word to a letter of the alphabet.
Illustrate each letter of the alphabet using words and pictures from the newspaper (only).
On each page, write a sentence using one of the words. Underline the word used.
Age appropriate spelling will be considered.

Grade: 2 My Favorite Meal
Use grocery store advertisements from the newspaper to illustrate your favorite meal.
Write a paragraph explaining what the meal is and why it is your favorite.
Judging: Originality, creativity, neatness, spelling, grammar, and sentence structure will be considered.
Grade: 3 News Article: What’s going on in my 3rd grade classroom?
Minimum of 100 words/Maximum 200 words.
Words must be counted and number placed in upper right hand corner of paper.
Article must be neatly written.
Spelling and grammar will be considered.
Judging: Originality, creativity, neatness, spelling, grammar,.
Grade: 4 Advertise a Product
Find out cost of advertising in local paper.
Figure cost. List on a separate sheet of paper. Attach to essay.
Ad must include an essay of not more than 150 words on why student chose this product.

5th-12th grades (page 2)

Comic strip must have a minimum of 4 frames, a creative title, and a clear message.
Comic strip must be submitted on a sheet of 8 ½ X 11 sheet of paper.

Judging: Originality, creativity, neatness, spelling, grammar, varied dialect accepted.
Grade: 6 Research and Write
Write a news article on a current event.
Minimum: 200 words Maximum: 400 words

Judging: Interest of story, originality, newspaper format, neatness, sentence structure, spelling, grammar.
Grade: 7 Special Interest Reporter for a Day
Student must write a special interest story based on an interview.
The story must be typed in newspaper format.
The story must not exceed 750 words with a minimum of 600.

The NELRC's Fall Meeting on Saturday, December 17, 2006, focused on Newspaper in Education with Mrs. Patricia Mason-Guillory, past NIE Chairperson for the LRA. As the Ttile I Coordinator for Parental Involvement for St. Landry Parish and an advocate for using newspapers in education, she presented many useful and practical activities that supported effective reading instruction utilizing newspapers. The participants left with many, many supporting materials from Mrs. Guillory and numerous newspaper giveaways from The Times Picayune Newspaper of New Orleans, The Advocate Newspaper in Baton Rouge, The Daily Advertiser Newspaper in Lafayette, and several other south Louisiana newspapers. We truly appreciate their support in north Louisiana as well.
The NELRC's program began with a Cajun Christmas flavor with Mrs. Alisa Munn, a fourth grade teacher from Kiroli Elementary, who read the Cajun Night Before Christmas. Several doorprizes were given away also.
The meeting provided an opportunity to network with other educators and encourage the use of newspapers in the classroom as specified by the Comprehensive Curriculum and GLEs. Those present entered the workshop empty handed and left with an armful of excellent educational goodies for classroom use with the children.
