The Northeast Louisiana Reading Council has secured WalMart grants that were written by Past President Kathy O'Neal to fund an Author's Evening with author Dee Scallan and 10 year old illustrator Daniel. Dee and Daniel will travel to school districts across northeast Louisiana to present reading strategies that included parental involvement. School district that participated in literacy activities this past year will host Dee and Daniel for an evening of entertainment that includes activities for parents, students and teachers.
On Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, Dee and Daniel began the tour by autographing books at WalMart in Oak Grove to promote the Parental Involvement Evening at the West Carroll Media Center on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 at 6-7PM.

From Catahoula-Sharon Gilmore
Kathy,
Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity to have Dee in Catahoula parish.
We were very pleased with the parent response to Dee’s visit.  I think the selling point for parents was the opportunity to see their children participate in her presentation.  Also, the points Dee made on literacy to the parents after the children returned to their classes were well received by the parents as evidenced by their comments and questions to Dee.
Membership materials were made available at the registration table and also were presented verbally to the group.  Parents were encouraged to join our organization.  Some parents said they intended to visit the web site.
As a rural, impoverished district, we delight in ANY opportunity to expose our students to the importance of literacy and sound education.  To see a “local” author and student illustrator bring their work to life was such a rewarding experience for our students.

In January 2004, Jerry Pallotta presented at three Ouachita parish schools and then held an Evening with the Author sponsored by NLRC. Over 44 educators and parents attended, purchased autographed books, and enjoyed refreshments after listening to Jerry's excellent presentation.

In September 2003, the NLRC sponsored Prelude to Pathways with authors Tommy Thomasson and Mary Beth Sampson. These tremendous speakers received glowing evaluations from educators attending the event at the University of Louisiana in Monroe.

The NELRC plans to use as many local authors as possible as well as others desiring to participate. Children's authors are encouraged to send a brief resume including a biography and history of prior speaking engagements. See mrsoneal@yahoo.com for more information.

Educators may participate in the Author's Visit by helping to increase their parishes' membership for the 2004-2005 school year. NELRC membership begins July 1-June 30. The deadline for increasing membership is July 1, 2005. Morehouse and Richland parishes have increased their membership the most during the 2003-2004 school year. Ms. Peggy Horton and Ms. Lisa Cheek are to be commended for "getting the word out" about NELRC. There are also too many others to name in these parishes that have also worked to increase their membership. Super Job Morehouse and Richland. Grants were received from Franklin, West Carroll, and Ouachita to provide the Author's Visit for those parishes also.
